Have large groups of Starlings been taking over your bird feeders? We can help.
We’ll show you simple, effective ways to discourage those “greedy guests” while still creating a welcoming space for the songbirds you love. With solutions like Safflower Cylinders, Feeder Covers and Upside Down Suet Feeders, you can keep your feeders focused on the birds you enjoy most.
Safflower seed deters starlings, blackbirds and grackles. They do not eat safflower because their bills are not built for cracking open large seeds and because of the hard shells. As a bonus, squirrels do not like safflower because of its bitter taste.
You can try offering Sunflower Chips in a Tube Feeder. Starlings generally eat a little and move on leaving most of it for the songbirds you love.
You can try feeding Peanuts in the Shell to help attract jays, titmice, chickadees, nuthatches and woodpeckers. Starlings don't seem to bother with these much.
Continue to feed Nyjer® (thistle) to your goldfinches. Starlings don't seem to care much for this seed. Also, you might be surprised to see a few other visitors to your finch feeder; such as chickadees, downy woodpeckers and nuthatches.
Our Eliminator™ Squirrel Proof Feeder is another great solution to slow down the blackbirds. You can adjust the weight sensitivity so that if a larger birds lands on the cardinal ring the feeder ports will close. You can even remove the cardinal ring and perches to only allow smaller, clinging birds. Without the cardinal ring on you can also adjust the perches to make them shorter which also makes it harder for the blackbirds to use the perches.
Stop in and we can help you with any of these solutions. Tell the Starlings to move along!
